Opening ceremony

The Schumpeter School of Business and Economics officially opened on October 24, 2008. More than 300 top representatives from the university, the business community and the cities of Wuppertal, Solingen and Remscheid participated in the opening ceremony. The Dean of the Department of Management and Economics, Professor Michael Fallgatter, presented his welcome address to the audience, and the President of the Parliament of North-Rhine Westfalia, Regina van Dinther, gave a speech, in which she emphasized the importance of the Schumpeter School. According to University President Professor Lambert T. Koch, "Schumpeter will not only be the name of the Faculty of Management and Economics, but this is also a research and teaching programme related to Joseph A. Schumpeter. Given the many new colleagues and the established professors of the faculty, we can hope to meet very high standards and to conduct excellent research, for example on innovation, entrepreneurship, business cycles and growth in open economies."

As Professor Fallgatter emphasized in his speech, one should expect not only Schumepterian topics but also an increasing range of interdisciplinary projects: "We really should like to present the challenging Schumpeterian topics as a special opportunity for our students. The label Schumpeter School of Business and Economics indicates our ambition to bridge both pillars of analysis."

The Mayor of Wuppertal, Peter Jung, encouraged in his speech the School’s faculty – including the professors and general staff – to contribute to the excellent reputation of the faculty and the University of Wuppertal. In the panel discussion, the focus was on Europe’s future: Which Role for the Schumpeterian Entrepreneur? The debate was introduced by the Dean, and key statements were presented by Professor Horst Hanusch, Founding Member and Secretary General of the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society; Professor David B. Audretsch, Director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Economics in Jena; the entrepreneur and "Ambassador" of the city of Wuppertal, Mr. Markus von Blomberg; and the Economists of the University of Wuppertal, Professor Kerstin Schneider (Chair for Public Economics and Business Taxation), Professor Werner Bönte (Chair for Industrial Economics and Innovation Processes) and Professor Tobias Langner (Chair for Marketing and Market Research).

A broader research programme on innovation including that of a financial nature is being conducted by Professor Paul J.J. Welfens, who is a member of the Board of the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society.
